On September 15th, 2016, GE appliances announced that they were recalling 222,000 top-loading washers due to the fact that an electrical component within the washers can overheat and potentially cause a fire. At the time that GE announced the recall, the company had received 71 reports of internal washer components burning or catching fire, including three reports of fires that resulted in over $120,000 worth of property damage. No injuries have been reported as a result of this recall.
The recall involves GE Profile high-efficiency top-loading washers that come in gold, gray, and white. The recalled washer are roughly four cubic feet, and they have the name “GE Profile” printed on the front. The recall affects three models, these models are WPGT9350, WPGT9360, and WPGT9150, and all serial numbers are included in the recall. These units were sold at Best Buy, Lowe’s, Sears, The Home Depot, and other retailers nationwide from June 2003 through October 2011 for between 900 and 1,500 dollars.
