GE MICROWAVE SPARKED AND STOPPED WORKING

When a GE microwave sparked inside and suddenly stopped working, the customer needed to know whether it could be fixed or if it was time for a replacement. At our appliance repair shop in Wood Dale, IL, our technician found a blown 20-amp fuse and peeling paint inside the microwave cavity that had caused the sparking. Since GE no longer offers an approved repair for this type of damage, replacing the microwave was the safest option.

Can you repair peeling paint inside a microwave?

Not all damage to a microwave’s interior coating is the same.

Small surface marks may be different from coating that is bubbling, peeling, or flaking away. Damaged coating can expose the metal underneath and contribute to electrical arcing, which appears as sparks inside the microwave.

GE advises replacing a microwave when its interior coating is actively peeling or flaking because it does not have an approved repair method for that damage.

If your microwave sparks, stop using it. Do not try to cover the damaged area with household paint or continue operating the appliance to see if the problem happens again.

The Problem

The customer reported that the interior light sparked and the GE microwave suddenly stopped working.

There were no lights on the display, and pressing the controls did nothing.

The microwave was brought to AAA Appliance Service Center's headquarters in Wood Dale, Illinois, for an inspection

The Repair

Our technician found that the 20-amp fuse on the filter board had blown.

During the inspection, the technician also discovered that the coating inside the microwave cavity was bubbling and peeling away.

The technician identified the damaged coating as the cause of the sparking and blown fuse.

GE previously offered a cavity paint product, but that product has been discontinued. GE's current guidance recommends replacement when the interior coating is peeling or flaking because an approved repair method is not available.

Simply replacing the blown fuse would not correct the damaged cavity coating that caused the original problem.

The Solution

After evaluating the microwave and reviewing the manufacturer's guidance, our technician determined that the unit should not be repaired.

The technician called the customer, explained the findings, and recommended replacing the microwave.

No repair was performed. The inspection helped the customer understand why the microwave had stopped working and why replacement was the appropriate next step.

Sometimes the best appliance service is knowing when a repair is no longer the right answer.

MICROWAVE QUESTIONS

ask us
anything

Sparking inside a microwave can happen for several reasons, including metal objects, food residue, damaged components, or problems with the interior cavity coating. In some cases, an electrical fuse may also blow, leaving the microwave without power.

A qualified technician can help determine what caused the failure.

If the interior coating is bubbling, peeling, or flaking, stop using the microwave. GE recommends replacement when this type of coating damage occurs because it does not offer an approved repair method.

A blown fuse can sometimes be replaced, but the reason it failed must be identified first. Replacing a fuse without addressing the underlying problem may leave the appliance unsafe or cause it to fail again.

Microwaves contain high-voltage components that can remain dangerous even after the appliance is unplugged. Fuse diagnosis and replacement should be left to qualified service personnel.

It depends on what caused the sparks, the condition of the microwave, and whether the manufacturer supports a safe repair.

In this GE microwave, the interior coating was peeling and the manufacturer recommended replacement, so repairing the fuse alone was not an appropriate solution.
